Meat thermometer

Here are pictures taken 11-16-23 to show the temperatures at each line – RARE, MED and WELL. The goal was to calibrate the lines on this small thermometer called a “STEAK BUTTON” that has “1987 CHARCOAL COMPANION” inside on the gage face. Research online shows the name is from https://www.unionsquaregroup.us/pages/our-brands but their web site no longer shows this model. So the good news is that we now know that the RARE is very close to 135 degrees, MED is about 145 (but there are pictures that show other temps) and WELL is about 165. These measurements almost match the data I got from the web-

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the following are the internal temperatures for different degrees of doneness for steak:

  • Rare: 120-125°F (49-52°C)
  • Medium Rare: 130-135°F (54-57°C)
  • Medium: 140-145°F (60-63°C)
  • Medium Well: 150-155°F (66-68°C)
  • Well Done: 160°F (71°C) and above
